Brooches: Bringing back the Old with the New- All Things Vintage!

By Caitlin Goodman for Robert’s Jewelers –

When you think of brooches, you think of the early 1950’s to 1970’s, – or even possibly the Victorian ages! Brooches were first made at the Bronze Age, 1550- 1200 BC. A brooch is broadly defined as a large decorative clasp or pin, but it may be more specifically defined as a clasp with either a fixed pin attached to the back or a hinged pin and catch-plate on the back. It is a classic staple piece for women’s fashion and jewelry. They can be used to enhance an outfit whether it’d be a low hanging necklace pendant or on clothing.

Early brooches were large and made from sturdy metals such as bronze or silver to secure heavy wool or leather cloaks.

While brooches became a lost fashion in the last generation, they are making a comeback alongside with vintage fashion and wedding décor. Today, brides are using multiple brooch pins for a vintage-look bouquet instead of your traditional bouquet of flowers.

After the early twentieth century, brooches were primarily categorized as costume jewelry worn by women for decorative reasons. Late-twentieth-century trends included wearing brooches from folk or ethnic dress to denote ethnic identity or to display cultural heritage.
